Two-Phase Treatment

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF TWO-PHASE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?

Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized approach to orthodontic care that can benefit some patients. Rather than treating all orthodontic issues at once, two-phase treatment involves addressing certain issues in two separate stages of treatment. This approach can help to address orthodontic problems early, before they become more serious and difficult to treat, and can improve a patient’s overall dental health and appearance.

Phase One

The first stage of two-phase orthodontic treatment typically begins when the child is around 7-10 years old. During this phase, the orthodontist will focus on correcting any significant dental or skeletal issues, such as a misaligned bite, crowding, or spacing issues. This may involve the use of braces, clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances. Phase One treatment is designed to create the optimal conditions for adult teeth to grow and address any issues that could become more difficult to correct later on.

Resting Period

After the first phase of treatment is complete, there is usually a resting period during which the child’s remaining permanent teeth continue to grow in. During this period, the orthodontist will monitor the growth and development of the teeth and jaws and may recommend periodic checkups to ensure that everything is progressing as planned.

Phase Two

The second phase of two-phase orthodontic treatment typically begins once all the permanent teeth have erupted, usually around age 11-13. During this phase, the orthodontist will focus on fine-tuning the teeth and achieving the desired alignment. Depending on the individual patient’s needs, this may involve braces, clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances. Phase Two treatment is designed to perfect the alignment of the teeth and jaws and to ensure optimal dental function and appearance.
