Emergency Care

Braces are a wonderful investment in your dental health and your smile, but sometimes accidents happen. Here are some common scenarios and how to handle them until you can get in to see your orthodontist.

LOOSE OR BROKEN BRACKET

If a bracket is loose or broken but still attached to the wire, it’s generally not an emergency. However, you should contact your orthodontist to schedule a repair appointment as soon as possible. You can use orthodontic wax to hold the bracket in place and protect your gums from irritation.

POKE WIRE

If a wire is poking you, use the eraser end of a pencil or the back of a spoon to gently push the wire down so it’s no longer poking you. You can also use orthodontic wax to cover the end of the wire and prevent irritation until you can see your orthodontist.

LOOSE BAND

If a band comes loose but is still attached to the wire, it’s generally not an emergency. However, contact your orthodontist to schedule a repair appointment as soon as possible.

KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH

If a tooth is knocked out, it’s important to seek emergency dental care immediately. Place the tooth in a small container of milk or saliva to keep it moist, and get to a dentist as soon as possible. If your braces are damaged, let your orthodontist know as soon as possible so they can help you repair or replace them.
